Carmen Aurelia Lewis

May 25, 1920 — August 22, 2015

Carmen Aurelia Lewis was born on May 25, 1920. She was the third of seven children born to Arthur and Aurthense Lewis in Baguanos, Cuba. Carmen was raised on the beautiful island of Jamaica, West Indies. She was an avid seamstress, who made her own patterns and sewed many original designs for family and friends. She was noted for her unrivaled, intricate embroidery, which she was able to do by hand and by machine. Carmen, lovingly called Aunt May by all, migrated to the United States in the early sixties. She found her passion working in hospice at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx. There she worked as a Cancer Care Technician for twenty three years. She was a kind, compassionate soul, who could sense the needs of others, and was ready and willing to help without being asked. Her peers often remarked how easy it was to get along with Carmen. Her authoritative attitude, quick wit and glib tongue, won her the respect of young and old alike. She was the "go to" aunt for many of her nieces and nephews. Carmen's love of her God, family and friends, was the major contributing factor for her positive, stress-free outlook and lifestyle. Annual cruises with her younger sister, Julia, were her favorite vacation jaunts. Carmen retired from Calvary Hospital in 1985. Aunt May spent many of her retirement years nurturing and caring for her four grandchildren, born to niece/daughter, Chelsie. Carmen spent her last two years at the picturesque Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitative Facility under the loving care of a dedicated team of nurses, nursing assistants, doctors, therapists and other staff. Carmen was predeceased by two sisters, Leila and Lillian and two brothers, Joslyn and Jack. She leaves to mourn her loss brother, Kenneth; sister, Julia; niece/daughter, Chelsie; son-in-law, Derrick; grandchildren, Damian; Sheldon; Nicole; Emil; grand son-in-law, Edward; a myriad of nieces, nephews, grand and great-grand nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
