Eleanor Sammartano

March 29, 1926 — November 7, 2017

Eleanor Sammartano Harriman, NY On Tuesday, November 7th, 2017, Eleanor Sammartano entered rest peacefully at the age of 91 at the Valley View Nursing Home with family by her side. The daughter of the late Angelo and Carmella Izillo. Born in March 1926 at home in the Bronx. Her late husband Nicholas F. Sammartano was the love of the life. They were married for 56 years. She worked as a seamstress before becoming a loving mother of nine and a beloved Grandmother and Great Grandmother whose insight and love was deeply felt and cherished by each. She was the Matriarch of our large family. A proud first generation American from a deep-rooted Italian culture which centered around faith and family. Our memorable Sunday dinners with Mama's meatballs, braciole and gravy, always called us back home where there was always room for one more at the table. Mama had an open door and everyone was family. Music and singing along with gratitude filled our home. She spent time visiting our local nursing homes brought smiles to many while her granddaughter entertained. She enjoyed attending and worshipping at Highland Mills United Methodist Church. She was an avid reader and Scrabble was her game. Spent time embroidering, tending her garden and entertaining all those who came and stopped by to sit and chat and enjoy all the baking and cooking she so lovingly prepared. She brought humor, laughter, and joy to many who were blessed to cross her path. Eleanor will be missed by all who knew her. Her surviving family includes her Daughters, Marianne Controy, Laura Balkits, Lisa Perez, Son David Sammartano, Spouses and many dear Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. She is predeceased by her beautiful children Linda Torelli, Nicholas Sammartano Jr., Janet King, Judy Byrne, (infant) Nancy Sammartano. A Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Highland Mills United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to HMUMC 654 Route 32 Highland Mills, NY 10930. Funeral and cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Thomas F.
