John E. Murray

John E. Murray of Monroe, NY passed away on Monday, January 28 at Orange Regional Medical Center, at the age of 85. Born in County Monaghan, Ireland, John was just 21 when he arrived in the United States. He worked in NYC first as a plumber, then a carpenter and truly was a master craftsman and "John of all Trades". John met and married the love of his life, Mary, and they were married for 44 years at the time of her death in 2000. He has missed her so much since then but continued to work until the age of 80 when he no longer could. Had we allowed it, he would have been on a roof at 82. John is survived by his son Sean E. Murray (Carol) his son, Hugh J. Murray, and 6 grandchildren: Christopher, Ryan, Matthew, Timothy, Caris, and Erin. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, and son, Christopher. He will also be missed by Molly, our Golden Retriever, who he spoiled immensely and who accompanied him to the dining room for every meal. During his lifetime, John served as a Volunteer Fireman and Commissioner for the Chester Fire Department, the Chester Ambulance Corp, Tax Assessor for the town of Chester and a past Lieutenant Governor for Kiwanis. He owned his own construction company, established in 1964 and taught his son Sean the trade beginning at the age of 6. His legacy lives on with Sean and his grandson, Chris who has now joined the trade with his Dad. John Murray Contracting has done numerous jobs in Orange County and enjoyed long-standing relationships with customers throughout the years. John was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Monroe, NY where he served as an usher in years past. We would like to thank his home caregivers Esther, Valda, and Bridget for their care, love and support these last two years and the ICU doctors and nurses who cared for Dad in his last days. Services will be held Monday, February 4, 2019, during the hours of 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., located at 139 Stage Road, Monroe, NY 10950. A Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart R.C. Church located at 26 Still Road, Monore, NY 10950, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at St. Columba R.C. Church Cemetery located on Route 94 in Chester, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sacred Heart R.C. Church 26 Still Road, Monroe, NY 10950.
