Doris M. Szulwach a longtime resident of Chester, New York died December 2, 2013 at Orange Regional Medical Center in Wallkill, New York. She was 81 years of age. The daughter of the late Arthur and Hazel Carrera she was born in Fort Pierce, Florida in 1932. Doris was an avid fan of the New York Mets and the New York Giants. While in High School she was awarded the "Athlete of the Year" at the Fort Pierce High School, where she excelled in softball. Doris continued to play softball in the Ladies Softball League in Chester. She enjoyed attending family reunions in the Fort Pierce area. Doris also enjoyed her winter trips to the Adirondacks, Wyoming, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine snowmobiling and enjoying the countryside. Doris was very active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Orange Blossom Post 1167, Chester, New York. Doris is survived by her husband Edward (EJ) Szulwach at home, a sister Betty Hutchinson and a brother Hurley Carrera, both of Fort Pierce, Florida, along with several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2013 during the hours of 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., 3 Hudson Street, Chester, New York 10918. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, December 6, 2013 at the funeral home. Graveside services will follow at 11:00 AM at St. Columba R.C. Parish Cemetery, Route 94, Chester, New York. Fr. John Bonnici will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions should be made in Doris name, to the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion c/o Julie Bell, Treasurer, 41 Maple Avenue, Chester, New York 10918. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Thomas F. Flynn and the staff of Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, Inc., 3 Hudson Street, Chester, New York 10918.
