Gracie Elizabeth Pickett

March 29, 1929 — July 23, 2023

Gracie Elizabeth (Anderson) Pickett was born on Saturday, March 2, 1929, in Johnston County North Carolina to Samuel and Minnie (Lucas) Anderson. Fifteen children were born to the couple (three of whom died in infancy). Gracie grew up in rural Johnston and Wake Counties and attended James E. Shepard High School, Zebulon, NC. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized in the Baptist tradition. She married Will C. Burch on November 6, 1946. Ten children were born to her. Her first son, Johnny, died in infancy, Stephen, Judy, Jean, Elijah, Elizabeth, (twins) - Michael & Michelle, Norris, and Linette (father, Albert Crews). Her nephew, Willard High joined the household in 1965 two years after the death of his mother Etta, Gracies younger sister. Will C. Burch passed on March 12, 1968.
Even as a child Gracie was inquisitive, always learning and loved people. She inherited a keen interest in the bible and religion from her mother, however she questioned some childhood teachings and in early adulthood she launched a persistent search for what she felt was more accurate. Gracie joined the Radio Church of God in the mid 1960s. The church introduced her and her family to an exciting world of travel, effective mentors, and life-long friendships. "Miss Gracie" was a generous, non-judgmental person with a big heart. She had a way of making people feel valued and welcomed.
Her house was destroyed by fire in 1966, leaving the family with nothing. The children stayed with older sisters, Judy (Jimmy) and Jean (Daniel), while Gracie pursued employment, housing and a better life for herself and her family in Greensboro, NC, where they relocated in 1967. She worked tirelessly as a single mother at various jobs to support her family.
Gracie met George Roman Pickett in 1974 at an Annual Church Convention in Jekyll Island, GA. They married on January 11, 1976, in Newburgh, NY. Their home in the Marlboro Hills by a mountain stream became the place for everyone to gather and be refreshed. Her daughter, Judy, cared for them while in North Carolina, where they received love and support from all the family. As their health began to fail, they relocated to North Lauderdale, Florida, where daughters Elizabeth (Don) and Linette provided primary care. Roman passed on October 4, 2017. Gracie, a Sparkle of Light, was called home on July 23, 2023.
She was the last living member of her immediate family - preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Minnie Anderson, husband, George Roman Pickett, siblings Mary Blount, Ada Daniels, James Anderson, Etta Lyons, John Anderson, Samuel Anderson, Annie Carpenter Jackson, Minnie Morgan, Elsie Taylor, Edward "Lym" Anderson, Otis Anderson, and her sons, Johnny, Stephen, Elijah, and Norris Burch. She leaves to cherish her memory her children; Judy Harris, Flauie Towns, Elizabeth (Don) Hess, Michael (Lisa) Burch, Michelle (Willie) Lewis, Linette Burch, nephew; Willard (Brenda) High and a host of grand, great, great-great and triple great grandchildren.
