Lydia Sherman of Middletown, NY, formerly of Hudson, FL, Newburgh, NY, and Madeira Island, Portugal, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh, NY. She was 84. She was born in the village of Ponta do Sol, Madeira Island, Portugal, on November 4, 1940, to the late Joseph Pita and Agostinha DaSilva Pita. Lydia came to the United States as a young child with her family and grew up in Newburgh, NY. She married her husband, Gary W. Sherman, on May 26, 1963. He predeceased her on October 24, 2023. Lydia passed away just hours after the 62nd anniversary of their marriage, and they are now reunited once again.

Lydia chose a career as a dental assistant and enjoyed her work very much until she retired to Florida with her husband. She loved to travel and was an avid reader. But she loved spending time with her family and friends most of all. She was thought of as the sweetest woman by everyone who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.

Lydia is survived by her daughter Christine (Jeffrey) Garfinkel of Rock Tavern, NY, her daughter Kelly (Richard) Dunham of Rochester, NY, her granddaughter Mara (Robert) Cox of Saratoga Springs, NY, her granddaughter Brooke (Daniel) Rutkowski of Morris Plains, NJ, her grandson Brandon Corzine of Rochester, NY, her granddaughter Jenna Dunham of Rochester, NY, and her great granddaughters Madison and Cassidy Cox of Saratoga Springs, NY. She is also survived by her brother Leo Pita and his wife Joanne, her sister in law Gene Hubbard and her husband Robert, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Burial will be private and held at a later date.

The family entrusted Lydia's care to the Flynn family and Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Center's staff.

Cremation care will be provided under the direct supervision of Brendan and Thomas Flynn at Oxford Hills Crematory, Inc., Chester, NY.
