It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of Margaret Ann Courtenay's passing. Maggie was a beloved member of the Chester, New York community, having lived there for 54 years. Maggie, who was 84 years old, passed away peacefully at her home on October 23, 2023. She was a retired homemaker and widow of the late Lt. Robert G. Courtney, Sr., who died in the line of duty with the NYFD.
Margaret was born on August 5, 1939, in New York, to James and Evelyn Hasson. She was a longtime member of St. Columba R.C. Church in Chester, N.Y.
Shortly after September 11 terrorist attack, she was asked by the local parish priest to assist windows of fireman that were tragically killed having suffered the loss of her husband, Lieutenant Robert Courtney at an early age.
She was well prepared to give advice, guidance and assistance, and ended up doing God's work here on earth, with the widows of the brothers that her husband worked with.
Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Margaret is survived by her sons Robert Courtenay, Jr. of Chester, N.Y., and Steven Courtenay and his fiance Leigh Ann and her children Brent and Sara of Slate Hill, N.Y., daughter Susan and her husband Scott Penzetta of Poughkeepsie, NY. Additionally, her grandchildren, Daniel Atkin, Courtney Atkin, Theresa, Meaghan, Jackie Courtenay, her great-grandchild Jack Courtenay, and her Godchild Kathy Maher, survive her.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, husband, son Jack Courtenay, and sisters Mary Joseph and Evelyn Ingraham.
The visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Centers, 139 Stage Road, Monroe, NY 10950. The funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columba R.C. Church, 27 High Street, Chester, NY 10918. The burial of cremains will follow at St. Columba R.C. Church Cemetery Route 94, Chester, NY.
Cremation care was provided by Brendan & Thomas Flynn at Oxford Hills Crematory. The Flynn Family and Flynn Funeral & Cremation Memorial Center staff provide funeral arrangements and services.
