Maxine Jessie Charles passed peacefully at home in Sugar Loaf, NY, on Friday, January 21st, 2022. She was 84 years old.
Maxine was born on September 29th, 1937 in Fishs Eddy, NY, to Maxwell and Ruth Etta (Ostrander) Charles. She spent her childhood years in Middletown, NY where she frolicked merrily until beginning her professional career working as a telephone operator. Went on to study education and become an Elementary Teacher. She worked for Orange County Department of Social Services as a caseworker, purchased a house in Sugar Loaf, NY, and spent some time as a real estate agent. Later in her professional life, Maxine returned to college to attain her MSW and finish off her Social Services career with that accolade.
She enjoyed the beauty of nature, antiquing, gardening and entertaining friends and family in her home. Having the soul of an artist and a gregarious nature inspired her to open her heart, 1800s home, and carriage house to others by founding the Sugar Loaf Village Bed and Breakfast. Maxine flourished in the role of chef, local landmark liaison, and friendly guide to any/and all passersby and patrons. Her reputation and that of the establishment are worthy of praise and fond remembrance.
Maxine is survived by her son Frank P. Guerrera III, her daughter-in-law Tina Guerrera, her granddaughter and best friend Brittany Guerrera, her brother Lanny Charles and his wife Diane, as well as her aunt, Frances Steenrod and uncle Donald Charles and his wife Mary; and dozens of cousins.
She was predeceased by her former husband's Frank P. Guerrera II and Arthur F. Ahr, Jr.
While there is no formal visitation/reception planned at this time, the family will be planning an informal gathering for family and friends this Spring or Summer to celebrate her life and the joy that she brought to all who knew her.
