Walter Whitney

Walter Whitney of Goshen, New York, died peacefully in his sleep on August 22, 2025, at the Glen Arden Nursing Home in Goshen. He was 98, just a month shy of his 99th birthday.

The youngest son of George and Marie, he was born in New York City on September 23, 1926. For the past nine years, he had lived at the Glen Arden Assisted Living facility after having resided in Wurtsboro, New York, since 1986.

Prior to his retirement, Walter had worked as a postal carrier in Manhattan and lived in the Bronx for many years. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Germany toward the end of the war.

His interests and passions in life included art, theater, museums, photography, movie making, fishing, and dancing. Blessed with a mischievous and youthful sense of humor, he remained independent and feisty to the end. Even into his 90s, he was still a hit with the ladies with whom he liked to both flirt and dance.

Walter is survived by his son, Lance, and daughter-in-law, Cely. His immediate family included his nephew Todd and his wife Julie, nephew Rick and his wife Tracy, nephew Alan, niece Jill and her husband Bill, and niece Linda and her late husband Stan. He was predeceased by his beloved brothers Al and Mike, with whom he shared a deep bond.

He will also be deeply missed by the staff at Glen Arden, who cared for him and treated him as a member of their family. Their devotion toward him was a comfort in his final years.

He shared his love of art, theater, music, and travel with Lance as the two of them enjoyed many adventures together over the years. He was also intensely loyal and loving to his family, relatives, and friends. That loyalty included not only his son but his former wife, Elenore, who also lived at Glen Arden and whom he took care of in her final years before she passed away in 2018.
